Ahhhhhh-outside!!!!!!

This afternoon I went on my first outdoor bike ride since IM Florida WAY back in November. It was 62 degrees up here in the tundra we call Minnesota. Two Gear West buddies from IM Zurich (IronCliff, and IronJesse) and a couple others rode about 28 or so miles; not sure what our average was - maybe 18 or 19 mph, but who cares???? we were outside.

I have a 20 mile run on the schedule for tomorrow, but there is an 80% chance of rain, so I may have to either run in the rain, run on the dreadmill, or reschedule.

I have decided against running the Ice Age Ultra (50 mile trail run) on May 10th. It's the weekend before Fargo Marathon, and after being sick this fall, resulting in an inability to control my heartrate, I think I should (and will) be happy just doing marathons and Ironmans. Erin (many of you met her in Phoenix at the RnR marathon) ran with me last week for my 21 miler, and she got to watch me fade and then spike up to 240 bmp twice. It's just too scary. I feel like I'm going to faint and I get weepy. I was glad she was there. Anyway, thanks for hanging with me Erin - I'm glad you are my friend! I really look forward to doing the tri's we have on the calendar this summer, and I know Lana and I will have a blast with you at your first IM in Florida. mwaaahh!

------------------------ correction ----------------------
I don't want to make it sound like "I am JUST" doing IM's and marathons. They are a long way and I do TOTALLY respect that. What I mean is that I am not going to try to do MORE than what I am already doing.

you act as if 18-19 mph is just an "only" speed. I would take it in a heartbeat as my ave. for that mileage...or any other mileage!
Glad you are feeling better and listening to your body and determining what is best and healthy for yourself!

I'm bummed you won't be at Ice Age. I was considering doing it with RunBubbaRun just so I could meet you. Certainly understand why you are skipping it. Take care. Hope you guys have good weather up there for the long run. :)

I second fe-lady's thoughts on your bike speed.

And I feel bad for those people who live in the lands of eternal summer. They can never experience the sheer joy of that first outdoor, spring bike ride after a winter on the trainer.

I'm glad you had a friend with you too. And I loved how you said you're just doing marathons and ironmans...like it's no big deal!

Whoa - I think my post "sounds" different than I intended it to! I added a correction at the bottom.
IM is a great thing to accomplish - so is a marathon. What I meant is that I am stopping there. I am not going to try to do MORE than that. I feel lucky, and sometimes crazy even, to keep doing that. I do have permission from three cardiologists, but even so, it is so unnerving when it happens that it makes me wonder WHY I would ever need to do more.
It's been a revealing question for me to ponder. Please accept my apology if I made it sound like it was a little thing to accomplish. It is not. ;-)

IronJenny,

Stuff happens, will miss ya at ICEAge..I think you would have had fun trail running..

Hopefully they have some shorter trail races or even trail marathons by you to experience..

Maybe I'll see you at one of them one day..

Glad your ticker is still going strong and all the DOCs gave you the okay..

I have a healthy ticker, and 26.2 or 140.6 are enough for me. The day I race one meter longer, I have an advanced medical directive for the appointment of a guardian so that I can be committed to an asylum.

"just" just come naturally to you Jenny. Its like you don't even train you just race, recover, race, recover.

Sometimes these decisions are hard, but I agree..you have to take care of you first.

I need to take my own advise. I know in my head I need to NOT do marathons anymore. At least until I've had no ITBS for a long time. It's just so hard to say NO!

Nice ride with the crew. Sorry I missed it.
Just a thought on the 240 bpm. I think that 240 number is the default number when your wrist receiver detects an offending electrical field like a powerline or one of those 'invisible fences' for dogs. Mine does that at very predictable locations along my neighborhood run route. Test that where you know an invisible fence is.

Hey Jeff - Yeah - I know that. Mine did that in Zurich actually, along that area where the electic trains were. (remember that long slow hill fondly, eh?)

When I have an episode of a-fib like this (and this was only the 5th time since September when this all started), it doesn't beat exactly 240 - it goes between 242, 238, 219, back up to 237, etc. It makes me feel like I may throw up (which I did on my bike at IM FL), get dizzy (like I will faint if I don't stop and bend my head over), and if you put your finger on my caroted (sp?) you can feel the pulse just zinging.

I only WISH it were the electric wires, trust me. It is the most unnerving thing to feel going on inside of you. When I wore the 24 hour monitor, the pages and pages of read-outs show it happening scientifically all day, every day. But the rapid beat (the over 200 stuff) has only happened 5 times. But when it happens I sort of have to wonder why I am still doing this.

That would be 'carotid' and I'm really sorry your heart is still acting up. It must be really mad that it got sick. I'm still hoping that straightens out eventually.

You are amazing! And Ultras are nutty - I have to agree that 140.6 mixed up with 3 disciplines is plenty!
