Well, I finally had my first real bike crash. Coming into the parking lot after our 52 miler on Sunday, I flipped over a speed bump. Hard to imagine but I was TALKING to Laura instead of watching where I was going. What looked to me like painted white and yellow stripes in the road, were really a row of speed bumps.
I went over the handlebars, tried to brace myself with my palms, but landed on my head, cracking my helmet in two. Then I somersaulted, feet flying over my head, and landed on my right hip.
I got up feeling mostly just shaken, but as time has gone by, I've gotten pretty stiff. What at first looked like just a little road rash, is actually a little road rash plus a million bruises - like, everywhere!
I did take a few pictures, but I can't post them without revealing my DEEPEST DARKEST SECRET that I have a bit of celullite. ;-)
So the bruise stat is this: ankle, calf, inside of knee, back of hamstring, glute and hipbone, pubic bone, chest bone, front of quad, right elblow, left wrist, both palms.
Road rash stat is: left elbow, back, right hip, right palm.
Broken bones: zero.
Bike condition: fine.
Helmet: dead. This chunk out of my helmet coulda been a chunk out of my skull!
I am a little old for all this (45!) so I am taking all the time I want to get back in the saddle. I tried to walk/run on the dreadmill yesterday, but ended up only walk/hiking for an hour because every time my right foot hit the mill, my right hip screamed.
Tonight is our weekly club ride, but I don't want to lean on my elbow on my aerobar, nor do I want to hold myself upright with my bruised palms. Arghhhh!
So for the rest of the week, Ironmomjenny will be your go-to blog for dieting and closet-organization tips. ;-)

Jenny- Boy! I am glad that it wasn't worse, but still feel the pain of being bruised up. Take care of yourself, and hope you have a speedy recovery. Take as much time as you need, and I can't WAIT to hear about diet and organization! I am just finally mailing out something to you...sorry it's so late. Though perhaps the timing is better now! Hang in there, and here's to a speedy recovery.
Oh Jenny!!! Owie! That is awful. Do post a pic of your helmet. We all need those pictures to show to idiots who refuse to wear them.
I am SO glad you are okay.
I live in dread fear of the full endo - never done it and I hope I never do.
I hope you heal well and soon.
Wow - that was some fall. Glad to hear that there is no structural damage.
As if we Wildflower groupies don't already know your deepest, darkest secrets. ;)
Get better soon!
Yikes! I'm just glad you're ok. Your bruises will soon fade and you will back to yourself.
Glad to hear you're okay, thank goodness for the helmet. I'd say take as much time as you need, hope you heal quickly.
GASP!!! Oh, Jenny!! I'm so glad you're alright! Sounds like an awful fall -- so many bruised things! Take lots of time and TLC to heal, okay?
omygosh, jenny, i hope you're ok and healing up quickly.
wanna come visit and help me do some painting?? :-)
Boy..do I ever know how that feels..glad you are okay!!
Sorry to hear you crashed - but very glad to hear you're doing well.
Oh no! Glad to know you survived and that you were wearing a helmet.
Listen to your body as your recover. A little soreness is not reason to stay off the bike trainer but don't over do it.
Take care!
owie!! Glad you are generally okay, though
Glad nothing broke- especially your head! Heal fast vibes comin' attcha.
Jenny...sorry to hear that!
You are Top 5 Tuff Chick in the World...you will bounce back in NO TIME!
Ouch! Sorry to hear, but I'm glad that you're alright. No broken bones or any major injury is a good thing, right?
You know what they say - If you ride long enough, you WILL crash. Just think of it as getting yours out of the way. :)
IronJenny, so nothing broken, your truely made of iron..
Take care and rest up. I'm glad to hear your okay.
PUUUUUUULEAZE, give us pics. greyhound is correct. we've seen it all, if you know what i mean.
also, i can't believe that excessive TALKING was the cause of the accident. you are like a Sphinx!
thank god for helmets. i see cyclists all the time NOT wearing them i can just don't understand.
glad you are alright.
many have broken some serious things, with just that type of fall...
clearly, this only shows one thing:
YOU ARE MADE OF IRON!
I'm so glad that you are OK!
Seems like all the falls are when you just aren't paying attention, huh? I've had 2 of them. The last one, right before IM. I still have a spot on my leg where the bruise was/is that is tendor....
It's hard to stay forcused for that long, I guess :-)
Enjoy your rest... as much as possible :-)
Ouch - heal up!
Oh, man! So glad that nothing's broken - but sorry for the bruising. Get well soon!
That's what helmets are for! I tell everyone this who doesn't wear one! Glad you're OK!
I'll look to get sun-screened by you after the swim in WI!!! I'd love your good karma all over me!!
it always amaizes me to see folks riding without a helmet on - another crash just make the case for helmets ALL the time! Glad you are ok and nothing seriously damaged.
thats terrible but you really needed to list your bikes condition before your own and post a photo of your bike so we can all inspect it to make sure its okay.
Those darn curbs will get you every time.
Glad your well. and get a massage. And a good ART specialist. And maybe some pain killers. And get your bike in the shop and on the rack for an inspection (move to first item on agenda).
That's scary! I'm glad you're doing fine.
yikes that's scary! glad to hear all is well. the helmet pic speaks volumes! i had a close friend banged up very badly a few months ago on a training ride...lots of broken bones, but the helmet saved him too!
looking forward to the closet organization tips for sure!!
happy healing!
oh ouch! And yeah, that helmet goes byebye! I broke my arm doing an endo - you're lucky you didn't do more damage (as if you aren't suffering enough, I know).
Take it easy - you have time to heal, use it!
finally - you got the crash out of the way now hopefully you're in the clear again for a few more years.... rest ice compression elevation and margaritas will make you all better soon!
Thank God you weren't even going very fast! Take all the time you need to heal. The thighs look fine by the way, can't see the cellulite over the computer ;-)
geez... i leave for 19 days and you fuck yourself up...
i would imagine that your highly trained athletic prowess probably spared that wreck from being even worse.
glad you're okay.
